Flu Scare

Scenario:

Smiley wakes up yesterday morning complaining that her throat and neck hurts. She later says her whole body hurts. She's pretty low-key and finally asks to halt school and go lay down. By mid-afternoon, she has fever. After it got over 100 degrees, I went ahead around 4:00 and made an appointment with our doctor (thanks goodness...we'd have never gotten in if we'd waited until today to call!). Motrin helped control symptoms through the night, but she battled the headache and 103 temperature off and on through the night. Before I went to bed, I remembered an email from a friend who commented that two families in our Sunday School class had children being treated for H1N1. The coincidence? Those kids and my kids were all in the nursery together last Friday night while the parents attended a Sunday School party. Hmmm...that doesn't sound good, does it?? Surely, the church nursery didn't contaminate our kids?!?!

Results:
After 2 long hours at the doctor's office (our poor pediatrician was covering two loads, due to another dr. being out sick), Smiley's flu and strep swabs came back negative. Very strange indeed, though I'm VERY thankful to not be dealing with H1N1!! Because her throat is so red, we are sending the strep test off to be cultured. But, at this point, it just looks like tonsillitis, which is viral and can produce aches and fever (like the flu). She is contagious, so we cancelled a couple of fun activites, much to the girls' dismay. It's never fun to be sick!

Tonight, she's still fighting fever and a headache. She didn't even eat supper, which says a lot for Smiley, poor baby!

We are praying that this doesn't spread to the rest of us! Whew - what a couple of days! Smiley is such a trooper, though.
